Babies and toddlers fall constantly. There is no way around it between them climbing, jumping, running. Adding siblings in the mix, it’s a no win scenario of staying 100% safe all the time. Some kids, like mine, just need bubble wrap around them for a few years. See that smile up there on the picture above, yep… that’s my son missing half of his 2 front teeth. In that instance, it was hard to tell how bad that fall was. How do you tell you the difference between an “all fall down” moment versus an ER moment?! Today, we are talking about teeth, so Dr. Sarah at Homegrown Pediatric Dentistry is here to guide us through accidents involving children’s teeth.

 

 

Dr. Sarah’s Emergency Tooth Notes:

Six years-old & under (baby tooth):

• Apply pressure to the area with a washcloth if it’s bleeding.
• Give an ice pop to reduce swelling. Give the appropriate age amount of Tylenol or ibuprofen for pain.
• If you see a bump in the gums next to the tooth that got injured, that is a bigger concern. It would look like a little pimple in the gums.
• Take them to the dentist to get it evaluated. The dentist may take an X-ray to see if the root is ok.
• If the baby tooth gets knocked out, do not try to put it back in place in the child’s mouth because it can damage the permanent tooth that is forming underneath it.

Seven Years-Old & older (permanent tooth):

• Take the child to the dentist.
• If the tooth is chipped, the dentist can put a white filling to fix it cosmetically.
• If the permanent tooth gets loose/wiggly, the dentist may place a splint/brace to hold the tooth in place until the tooth tightens up again.
• If the permanent tooth gets knocked out, find the tooth and hold it by the crown (the chewing part- not the root). Call your dentist’s emergency phone line, put the tooth in milk (milk has the same pH as the tooth to help keep the tooth cells alive longer). Do not put the tooth in water. Get to your dentists office as soon as possible!! The dentist may try to re-implant the permanent tooth back into place to save the tooth.

 

 

Here are some ways to prevent tooth injuries that more commonly come into the office: 

– wear a mouth guard during sports
– use a non-slip bath mat and sit down in the bath
– be careful diving into shallow pools

 

 

We are so thankful we had Dr. Sarah when my son’s accident happened, and she was able to tell his permanent teeth are still in great shape.
